I think that would work well in a
crowdsourced community like Wikipedia.
Regarding spammer motivation, despite making links nofollow on the average
blog comment thread, blog comments still get pounded by comment spam. By
12:21pm today, Akismat alone caught over 6.6MM spam comments. And, I'm sure
the vast majority of those spam comments, if they had gone through, would
have been on a comment thread that implements rel=nofollow. So, despite
having no PageRank incentive, spammers still pound the heck out of blog
comments. I think the same principle and incentives apply to Wikipedia
today.

Re: Wikipedia Rel=NoFollow

Not sure I agree. You make it seem like the direct traffic is the only reason someone would create a link. Of course page rank is an incentive, and no follow completely removes that incentive. The traffic fire hose is only really relevant on pages with huge amounts of traffic, which are usually the pages that are better maintained and less susceptible to spam in the first place. The articles with bad spam problems are usually the ones that receive less traffic, and therefore less attention from legitimate editors. These pages still receive some page rank, and were the primary problem that I remember on wikipedia prior to the nofollow implementation.

I do feel like there ought to be a way to award legitimate links in wikipedia by grading links or editor votes that could upgrade a link.

Re: The Get Down Guy | leitch:

MLB.TV is a great example of how they can optimize the revenue stream through making previously unavailable content available to out of market customers. However, as Peter mentions, none of this is at expense to the in market viewership.

I don't think ESPN will be threatened by the leagues as much on TV, but may find themselves cut out of the equation for distributing live sports content online. It's strange to think that with all the money involved in the TV deals that ESPN has been unable to roll out a compelling online live viewing experience a la CBS Sportsline with March Madness, but the damage is being done.

Re: Thoughts about the App Store/FCC/Google/ATT thing

I don't think it's surprising at all that someone who considers himself liberal or progressive finds it objectionable when the government sticks its nose into their area of expertise. Like DonRyan above, I think people generally want to operate absent of intervening powers and be trusted to continue competitive and honest businesses. But if people support interventions by government entities in other industries, I feel it makes it harder to make an argument for why a single industry should be exempt.

Personally, I find it odd that these types of actions are viewed as anti-competitive. On the contrary, this is hyper competitiveness. Developers have significant influence in these decisions. As you pointed out, there are alternative platforms to develop for, and the number is growing.

Innovation will not happen immediately, but I believe it will happen. FCC oversight into these types of business decisions only complicate matters, and is even a bit insulting.

Re: Last night show: Conor Oberst & Wilco

I can understand why people find the newest album less exciting, but I've enjoyed it quite a bit so far. My favorite thing to do right now is mix in Being There tracks with my favorites from the new album in a play list. They work well together.

I also couldn't justify the trip out to Coney Island...they'll be back to Manhattan/Brooklyn soon enough.

Re: The Get Down Guy | Sally and I are on a boat.

We were there for a leukemia charity event.

We need to get Scott and Mike on an email chain for the game discussion. It was difficult, but getting teams to buy into Pivotal Tracker has been extremely rewarding. It's not the greatest system if you're just using it to do bug tracking, but as a complete project management tool it is fantastic.

I've also heard that Github was the best app for Subversion, but I haven't had the time to figure out how it works.

How has your experience using Sites been? I've used it basically as a wiki to better document user stories and chores from pivotal tracker. It feels like kind of a work around and I'm interested to see if there is a product better suited for that type of work.

Re: The Get Down Guy | fred-wilson:

On issues such as abortion, gay rights etc... these views can work in harmony. However when it comes to other "social liberal" issues concerning government welfare, government run healthcare etc... the ideologies collide, and one has to win over the other.

Re: The Get Down Guy | My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2009-6-14)

You've been waiting 2 years for this haven't you...

Re: A Lesson From Morty

I want to print this out and hang it on the wall in our office.
