Twitter's direct message notification is a perfect example of the Don't Break Email anti-pattern. Basecamp used to break email but then implemented a clever reply-handling feature.

it does seem that any footprint or shadow or, ok call it presence, a person projects into the web-o-sphere could be used to give more context to their search queries. the ideas has great potential!
