I think that's why I'm between laughter and a bit of sadness. Knowing that what unites us is a frame of reference, but knowing that that frame of reference comes at a cultural cost that's (usually) at the detriment of non-American culture.

But yeah, I think I may have to go down to Venice soon. Your suggestion may be an interesting project actually. :)

Also, what is up with the slaps at the 1 minute mark? Haha!

Re: Giannii

BTW I edited that silly video of us doing hero jumps. JK.

Speaking of storytelling and Africa, have you seen Chris Abani's presentation at TED? It's one of my favorites ...

(And he writes frequently about Los Angeles ...)

Re: ZADI DIAZ

Seriously! Kinda makes me remember all the times I used to see the South Bronx painted in a horrible light. It's always funny (well not always) seeing people's expression when I tell them where I'm from - as if I should have multiple scars, a horrid past, or a drug problem of some sort. So, yes, definitely know what you mean.

Hmm, I guess there's an interesting question here: When it comes to writers painting fictional worlds in real-world settings, should they have creative carte blanche, or should there be a sort of moral compass/code of awareness?

Overall, I do believe there should be a balance in storytelling (which is just as important as journalism, one could argue)... I have to admit before I went to Joburg the media had me pretty scared of the place. And it was one of the most amazing places I've ever visited. :)

Re: ZADI DIAZ

I know, I almost wish they had a director's commentary to this.
