I had mine for about a week before I put a case on it. I'm gentle with phones and have rarely used cases for iPhones in the past because of their excellent "in hand" feel. The Jet Black 7 Plus was pretty much scratched all to hell after a few days, though. The Apple Leather case does look lovely on it, but I do wish I could carry it bare.

I've always secretly wished I was a member of a faith tradition that encouraged clergy to wear vestments. Our college chaplain was Methodist, but he always wore the collar and white or black shirt while on campus or anytime he went in public... don't think I ever saw him in anything but that and it really made an impact on me. However, the metaphor of being clergy in "plain clothes" is powerful.

You'd rather plug an HDMI into a TV and have it run to a laptop or desktop that you need to position close enough to your computer rather than have a small and dedicated (and cheap) device that does that sort of streaming and more? That makes no sense.

There's a balance that oscillates with each day (or sometimes hour) that depends on the need(s) of the flock you've been called to pastor. It would ultimately be more selfish to try and figure out (on your own) that you need to operate your ministry in a certain way based on your own feelings. Ebb and flow with each of your sheep and be yourself.

Haven't had cable since 2003. Beyond sports (which is being replaced by MLB app) I've had no reservations. Netflix, Hulu, Google Play, Amazon etc via the Roku (as well as History and AE apps on Android) and Chromecast more than make up for having cable!

When you sign up to use a service like Facebook or GMail or Twitter etc, you are agreeing to be marketed to based on your data.

I never understood or understand the 'outrage' that users have over such services based on their very nature.

If you want to to own your own stuff, you have to pay-to-play for the most part (either/or money or time to set up). Not only are most people not likely to do that, there's the lemming effect of 'going where your friends are.'

Exactly, Brandon. Great points about having multi-points of failure.

I think we were really close to getting to the pinging/notification system for updates in '07ish at the height of Twitter's open API, tracking and protocols like pubsubhubbub. Much of that excitement died down with the expansion of Facebook etc but I think (hope) more and more folks (especially young folks) are going to start investigating how to get us out of the walled gardens. At least the ones who want a better web.

I'm using Fever installed on my server mainly because it integrates with Press on Android but I've been tinkering with TinyTinyReader. It's a great idea for sure.

I've been using my host for my mail but looking into turning this Ubuntu machine into a mail server (already serving well as a media server with Plex).

I keep meaning to install OwnCloud. Downloading now. Thanks for the reminder!

Set my Chromecast up with an Ubuntu 13.04 laptop last night and everything worked fine (after skipping the "we recommend another device" part).

Tabs etc play great over the Google Cast extension in Chrome on this Ubuntu laptop as well.

I'm biased here because I happen to be Merianna's fiance, but I just wanted to chime in on your thoughtful post, George.

I don't think what we need are more congregations in the CBF or the SBC and church planting is not the best primary answer for women (or men) looking to fulfill their call to being a pastor.

As a past seminarian myself, I've seen friends go the church planting route out of frustration from not being able to find a pastor role or position within a baptist church. What I frequently saw was the creation of an "us vs them" mentality in the communities surrounding those church plants and it led quite often to burnout for the new pastor.

Simply put, the seminary process for baptists looks a great deal different than it did in past decades when a degree and ordination certificate meant that you could find a role within a local congregation. Partly because of the economy, pastors are holding onto positions for much longer term and churches large and small are less inclined to take the financial burden of supporting a recent and "unproven" seminary graduate.

That's not good or healthy for our churches and fellowships/conventions overall.

I'm praying Merianna is able to follow her call as she feels convicted and as I've witnessed. She will be an amazing senior pastor and servant to our Lord.

It's a shame to me that we often put politics above prayer and real need when we hand out pastor roles.

Not really creepy at all. They're replacing the text ads that previously ran atop of the inbox or in the right side.

Twitter, Facebook etc does the same with in-stream ads so why wouldn't Google? At least they're relevant and placed in a promotions tab unlike other services.

Don't forget, this is for the FREE version of GMail as well, not the paid apps versions.
