How it is taking the best of the older, humanistic manner of business and the more modern, industrial manner of business. How it is allowing us to interact and transact like humans, at scale. How it is important to design to allow serendipity to happen, by letting people and ideas collide, and yet I was faced with the constant challenge of removing the heightened noise from such systems.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Thus far though I have been hearing about Push vs Pull only in management circles. And now I come across this post wrt design, and I was intrigued.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I understand and revere simplicity, but to me, simplicity is not a crutch (due to lack of intelligence in the users) but it is an elegance (which allows people to accomplish their main job for which they hired my tool in as quick and easy manner as possible).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;People are not morons, or ADD afflicted*, rather they are creatures of purpose, goals. Any tool that does not let them do their job in the least number of steps is inelegant, unpolished. Anything that does not help them achieve their goals is a bore, a burden.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And it is&lt;br&gt; for this Pull design that I think ODI/JTBD** and Social Modeling (Goal &amp;amp; Agent Orientation)*** frameworks are very well suited since they help us understand what customers really need and what are the factors that impact them, their work and their decisions. &lt;br&gt;Similarly, Service Dominant Logic is better than Goods Dominant Logic &lt;br&gt;from a value creation perspective.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;---------------------&lt;br&gt;* Well, it is true that the trends cited wrt people's attention spans are alarming, but it has always been so with the rise of every new media.&lt;br&gt;** Strategyn's Anthony Ulwick and Lance Bettencourt took Clayton Christensen's idea of Jobs To Be Done and put it into an Outcome Driven Innovation framework that focuses on the Jobs that people are trying to get done, the Outcomes which they use as a measure of the satisfaction from any solution that they hire to get the said job done, and the Challenges that impede the adoption of the said solution.&lt;br&gt;*** Social Modeling for Requirements Engineering, especially the i* (i star) framework relies on the Strategic Dependency and Strategic Rationale models. While it is true, it is not a comforting thing to see my age old likes being leveraged to make them look like endorsements of what the brand has to say. While it is a fact that I did like the brand, it does not mean I like everything that they do/say, nor is it a license (not the legal meaning of the term, that would get into terms &amp;amp; conditions related discussions) to let facebook or the brand leverage it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Lots of 'whiles' in the above paragraph. :-(&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And therein lies the dichotomy I guess. I have read &amp;amp; talked on this topic for ages now ... but from a BPM perspective (one vendor segment you missed). Though a BPMS is supposed to cater to business processes other than those covered by a ERP/SCM/CRM, I have often seen them being used for the aforementioned processes too.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And in a BPMS you model &amp;amp; automate the process/work flows after doing rounds of discussions &amp;amp; interviews with the various stakeholders involved in the execution &amp;amp; management of them processes ... with no scope for handling emergent / exception scenarios. Oft have I given a sheepish response to the end users that the problem they are facing is due to an exception scenario, and it is not built into the system ... and that if they need to do it more often, why, they can give the requirements for the 3rd release cycle from now since the next one is almost due for production &amp;amp; the development has begun on the one after the next ... or something to that effect.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I started hating the term 'exception' at one time ... thankfully I am at peace with the term now. Zen ...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But, social has come to torment me from the other end now ... there is so much confusion in this unstructured world that it seems to beat the purpose of it all. Especially these two points:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1. Collaboration is dependent upon communication, and communication is a network phenomenon.&lt;br&gt;2. Collaboration is inherently composed of two primary components, without either of which collaboration cannot take place: social negotiation and creative output.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And when it comes to collaboration in enterprises, I focus on the next two points:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;3. Collaboration in small groups (roughly 2-25) relies upon social negotiation to evolve and guide its process and creative output.&lt;br&gt;4. Collaboration in large groups (roughly 25-n) is enabled by stigmergy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;BTW, Emergence is a network phenomenon too like Communication &amp;amp; Collaboration. And one cannot have social anything unless theres a network of relationships. And hence my thought that social &amp;amp; collaboration are redundant terms.&lt;/p&gt;</description><dc:creator xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">A. Emergence is a network characteristic, no? The tools allow more of it to happen, because more random connections are happening in the organization. And thats a good thing.
