There are more than 50,000 titles published every year. Not all of them will be ebooks. For the same reason that the fastest growing music segment is currently vinyl, paper books will never die, but the big publishers (most of them anyway) surely will.

Re: Write One Leaf: Ask me anything

Oh, yes, of course they'll return. I was likely telling myself all of what I said more than anything else because I have been SO TEMPTED TO DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU SUGGESTED. Hell. Hell and damn. This month I missed something like five days in a row because I simply didn't have time during the day. And I need to be careful not only about "cheating" myself out of real writing time, but also about being a damn rule follower. Both are the sort of slippery Tiny Wings slopes that will keep me from writing, sleeping, eating, and other necessary activities.

What I will do, however, is allow myself to count things I'm otherwise writing. This may also be "cheating," but this is writing that I care about. Something I'm responding to on Tumblr, for instance. This response right here I may just copy out and paste into my 750 words because I'm actually thinking about what I'm trying to say here and goddamnit that counts.

I had a writing teacher in college who's best (and perhaps only) advice was to write every day. 750 Words is an awesome tool for doing that. I just gotta be careful I don't let myself become the tool who's only writing to be loved.

Holy Baby Jesus I totally forgot to post my favorite Tom Waits song.

Re: http://effyeahnerdfighters.com/post/3662138470

Thanks for the link. If we're talking about pure "this is all I do" criticism, then I will refer you here: "http://www.therestisnoise.c...". But if we're talking about criticism in general... then I would have to say let's use someone particularly famous, such as Abraham Lincoln, who was a critic of slavery. Surely those who opposed him would say that he didn't deserve to have a statue made in his likeness. And certainly he did more than speak of his criticism of slavery.

But I'm not a fool. I know this isn't the sort of criticism you're talking about. Still, I would hesitate to make any absolute statement, and I'd further hesitate to say that there is no statue anywhere some rather popular critics such as Roger Ebert and/or Gene Siskel (who has, prehaps remarkably, had an entire film institute named after him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik....

Is it common to make statues of pure critics? No. Is it a good idea for an artist to pay attention to what his/her critics say? No. Should we be saying that critics never have statues made of them, even if it gets us on the Tumblr radar? I don't actually know the answer to that, but I lean toward "no, we shouldn't."

I can't believe I just wrote this much about this. I didn't think I cared so much about it.

And now I wonder if I actually do.

Either way, blessings.

Re: http://livejamie.com/post/1321657971

Pithy?
