I'm a johnny-come-lately to the data sciences profession. More importantly, I'm pivoting and reinventing my professional career from the marketing strategy side and management consulting profession to data analytics (with a focus in the healthcare domain). The hard-earned wisdom you generously share motivates me as I power through and immerse myself within Google's Data Analytics Certification course. I'm 3 1/2 courses in and you do a phenomenal job of reinforcing the learnings, effort, and traits required to stand out in the data sciences.

I aspire to become a top-notch data scientist who separates oneself from the pack like the one described in your post. For me, this mission will require many, many years of dedicated focus, hard work, multiple mistakes, and continuous learning. I hold zero delusions of grandeur and am aware of the steepness, length, and commitment this transformation will take. But, I've been searching my entire professional life for a craft that fulfills me on multiple fronts.

I'm stead fast in my belief that the data sciences is where I should be moving forward (even though what little hair I have left is white not gray). Thank YOU for flipping on the light switch in a dark room so newcomers can see what's inside. Your writing gives guys like me a target to shoot for and a fighter's chance to succeed.

Re: How to Use Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Pages as an SEO Treasure Trove

Very timely article Mike especially with the accelerating adoption of smart speakers like Amazon Alexa and Google Home. comScore forecasts that 50% of all search activity will be voice search.

Re: In search of job security, millions turn to freelancing

@rg leaver - Here's the link to the Fortune.com article referenced in paragraph two: 50 and Fired - http://archive.fortune.com/...

Re: In search of job security, millions turn to freelancing

Elaine, thank you again for including my story in your comprehensive article on the increasing freelancing trend throughout the United States! As your article smartly articulates, old SEO methods or "ugly underbelly" practices around link farms or keyword stuffing were "after-the-fact" or "after-you-published-it" practices to game Google's algorithm. Google's publishing of its quality guidelines signals how design thinking has to take place before we write or publish one word of text or form of content. SEO, content marketing, and public relations aren't isolated functions anymore. These tactics and considerations have to be mapped out and designed into the creative process for every piece of content. From The Beginning. That's how "helpfulness quality" will be judged moving forward.

Re: The End Of Blogging?

Seth, I use FB, but my sentiment is the same.

Mitch, is your next reveal that YOU are Luke Skywalker's father. They experienced hiccups along the way, but Zuckerberg knew this was where users were heading. Remember, two years ago how FB's IPO and stock got pummeled for not initially showing how to deliver mobile ad revenue? Zuckerberg and team were still learning and iterating how to improve their mobile apps. They did learn, and the Q2 2014 Facebook Investor Relations slides bear that out -- those charts on daily and monthly mobile usage -- WOW!!

Re: Falling Short Of Your Best

Mitch, thank you for these inspiring words. Bravo! I love it. I've been reading and enjoying the posts you've recently published about the impact of big data (and what/how we leverage it to our competitive advantage).

But, this gem of a post reminds us "it's the little things that matter."

I agree that big data will spearhead the movement to Web 3.0. Reid Hoffman said in his latest Charlie Rose interview that synthesizing information into actionable intelligence is the next phase.

But, if individuals and organizations don't execute on your aforementioned three lessons on getting the small things right, none of that big data linked to its inherent insights matters .

Great post. And, please come back to Kansas City soon.

Re: BLOGOSPHERE: Zuckerberg's SNL appearance

Dave, thank you for citing me in your article. This is very generous of you.

I respect Mark Zuckerberg for taking a risk with his recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) appearance. Zuckerberg is savvy in selectively capitalizing on real-time public relations opportunities. The Social Network as a Best Picture Academy Award nominee and this SNL appearance are positive momentum for Facebook pre-IPO.

Most importantly, it reinforces the image that Facebook is now THE professional destination for Silicon Valley's most talented engineers (e.g., not Google anymore). It's hardly coincidental on January 31st Google announced its plans to ramp up hiring for its Android mobile apps business (literally 2 days after Zuckerberg's SNL appearance).

Re: Social Means Freedom, for Better or for Worse

Nilofer, I want to commend you on this highly insightful series! @Nigel Davies makes an important point I hope you will expand upon and publish as a designated post (e.g., Why You Don't Need a Job).
Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha published The Start-Up of You last week. The principles of their book in managing our respective careers with an entrepreneurial mindset aligns exactly with your core organizational value / capability focusing on nimbleness. Today's corporate employees, freelancers, or entrepreneurs require the same type of nimble business model and values you espouse to survive and thrive in today's highly competitive job market and equally brutal economy.

Hoffman and Canocha's principles centering around Personal Assets (soft & hard), Aspirations, Market Realities, the ABZ Planning Framework, Permanent Beta, and Pivoting all weave in the importance of personal and professional nimbleness. Nimbleness certainly isn't just for corporations!

As you can see by my comment, I'm a huge fan of this book and its principles. Even more importantly, I hope you and Ms. Green will seriously consider the individual-side of the principles discussed in your outstanding series.

Thank you Nilofer -- I can't wait for the publication of your next post! I check my HBR RSS feed daily so I can learn more from your wonderful insights and the outstanding dialogue resulting in each post.

Re: Conversation Agent: reThinking Business

Valeria! Your presentation was phenomenal and thought-provoking. It was a true privilege to have you come to Kansas City.

And, most importantly, I enjoyed the opportunity to finally meet you on a personal level. I've been studying your writing and commenting on your outstanding blog for around two years. During that time, you've been so generous in developing our mutual online rapport.

I think that's what made personally meeting you so special. The authentic and direct connections we make via social channels ARE REAL & DO MATTER (despite the beliefs of the non-believers and naysayers).

Re: Conversation Agent: ... then I Discovered I am Actually Funny

So when you come to Kansas City this Thursday, are you going to open up your talk with "I flew all the way in from XYZ, and boy are my arms tired ..." (insert gratuitous drum cymbal crash sound here). :-)

I love how you're willing to experiment and try new approaches in your writing -- that takes guts! During your upcoming talk, I hope you'll provide some glimpses into the angle you're thinking about for your upcoming book.

Please never abandon the conversational edge and for lack of a better term, "full-court press Maltoni writing style" that I absolutely love. As an example, "Top Blogs That Have Not Linked to Conversation Agent" (published April 14, 2010) is still my favorite post.

That post reflects your unique ability to creatively provoke and spark conversation. The way you handled the comments elicited by that post still makes me say, "Wow, I wish I could write like that!" As soon as I finished reading it, I immediately subscribed via RSS.

But, I will follow and look forward to the directions you are going to take with this blog and your upcoming book. I'm a loyal fan.

Travel safely Valeria. And, we'll see you in a few days in KC!
